transporting goods around the Netherlands. Their son, who prefers to remain anonymous, joined them during school holidays on their journeys.Jan's back problems worsened after years of heavy labor, leading to a failed surgery in 2003. As his pain persisted and Els'

condition deteriorated, the couple discussed euthanasia and joined the Netherlands' "right to die" organization, NVVE. Jan explained, "With the pain I have and Els’ illness, I think we have to stop this," referring to their decision to end their suffering through euthanasia.
